چکیده

1.1. The problem According to the functionalist view of perception and cognition (Brunswik 1955), perceptual information processing serves to support the organism in reaching its fundamental goals: avoiding dangers and gaining access to resources. Both dangers and resources are provided by objects in our environment. Thus a large part of perceptual processing can be understood as answering the question, ‘What is out there?’. However, even correctly answering this question is not sufficient for deciding on a course of action, because our possible interactions with the environment necessarily lie in the future compared to the time from which the information originated. Therefore, the second question to be answered is: ‘What will these objects do in the future?’; that is, our perceptual systems must describe the flow of events in the environment, and interpret them in terms of the behaviours of objects.

The Intraparietal Sulcus and Perceptual Organization

The structuring of the sensory scene (perceptual organization) profoundly affects what we perceive, and is of increasing clinical interest. In both vision and audition, many cues have been identified that influence perceptual organization, but only a little is known about its neural basis. Previous studies have suggested that auditory cortex may play a role in auditory perceptual organization (...

Auditory streaming and the continuity illusion.

In the present experiment, auditory stream organization was investigated in the presence of perceptually restored continuity. It was found that auditory streaming processes tend to yield the same perceptual organization independently of the presence or absence of perceptual restoration. Other observations include the dominance of frequency proximity over trajectory as a perceptual organization ...

Title : The auditory organization of speech and other sources in listeners and computational models

Speech is typically perceived against a background of other sounds. Listeners are adept at extracting target sources from the acoustic mixture reaching the ears. The auditory scene analysis account holds that this feat is the result of a two stage process: In the first stage sound is decomposed into collections of fragments in several dimensions. Subsequent processes of perceptual organization ...

Subcortical correlates of auditory perceptual organization in humans

To make sense of complex auditory scenes, the auditory system sequentially organizes auditory components into perceptual objects or streams. In the conventional view of this process, the cortex plays a major role in perceptual organization, and subcortical mechanisms merely provide the cortex with acoustical features. Here, we show that the neural activities of the brainstem are linked to perce...

Preattentive auditory context effects.

The effects of auditory context on the preattentive and perceptual organization of tone sequences were investigated. Two sets of experiments were conducted in which the pitch of contextual tones was varied, bringing about two different contextual manipulations. Preattentive auditory organization was indexed by the mismatch negativity event-related potential, which is elicited by violations of a...

Functional Organization of the Ventral Auditory Pathway

The fundamental problem in audition is determining the mechanisms required by the brain to transform an unlabelled mixture of auditory stimuli into coherent perceptual representations. This process is called auditory-scene analysis. The perceptual representations that result from auditory-scene analysis are formed through a complex interaction of perceptual grouping, attention, categorization a...
